If you could spend a day in my brain, I don't
think you would be surprised that musical, social and nature top my list.
While they may not be my entire intelligence package. They paint a fairly
accurate portrait of who I am and how I learn.
I
have great ease memorizing lyrics. So, having musical top my intelligences is a no brainer.
I can recall words to a song I haven't sung in decades. The
majority of Spanish words I know and comprehend are from songs I learned.
Social comes
in a close second. I learn best when working with others. My favorite
assignments have always been team exercises and reading stories or plays out
loud in a group. Nature rounds out the top three and helps
bring balance to my life. Whenever I go kayaking, looking at the simple beauty
of plants and animals surviving in a complex ecosystem always puts my mind in
the right frame to work out problems with work, school and my personal life.
Musical,
social and nature may not be the only ways I learn. However, if you want to get
the best out of me, they are a great place to start.
Unfortunately, I struggled with grades throughout primary and secondary schooling. Most of my classes from first through 12th grade were primarily taught using linguistic and logic styles of learning, my two lowest scoring intelligences. There was one exception that stands out and that was my sixth grade year. My teacher understood that we all learn in different ways and encouraged me to get involved with Olympics of the mind. We solved complex scientific problems while using music and acting. For the first and nearly only time during my pre-college days, science became very easy for me.

I never really thought of the ease in which I sailed through primary, middle and high school in this regard. Your post makes a lot of sense to me because my highest scores on the assessment included linguistic and logical/mathematical. It seemed that I was the firs tone done, rarely had homework, never studied and received A's without effort. On the other hand, I struggle with some of the creative (and more enjoyable) intelligence areas.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm SUPER jealous that I can't consider musical as one of my intelligence. I LOVE music! I'm a huge fan of live performances. Going to a concert or broadway show is my favorite date night. I actually was in my High School musicals. I got the leading role in Anything Goes. So crazy! I had to sing two solos and I really can't sing. I even tried playing clarinet in junior high and that didn't go so well either.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I introduce music from all genre to our kids (not just the top 40 hits) and we have dance parties with them in our kitchen every Friday night. We are also celebrating the weekend because we are both teachers..lol! Music has always played an important role in my life. I listen to music while creating artwork. I play music in my classroom when my students are in studio time. I don't know what I would do without music. Certain songs take me back to a time in my life which helps with my memories.
As far as the struggles in school and they way I was taught, I GET IT!
